**London, UK** – A new book, “Play Nice: The Rise And Fall Of Blizzard Entertainment,” reveals the behind-the-scenes tensions that led to the departure of Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime in 2018. According to author Jason Schreier, Morhaime’s frustration stemmed from ongoing clashes with Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, particularly after the merger of the two companies in 2008.
The book details a series of disagreements, starting with the cancellation of a highly anticipated “World of Warcraft” successor project known as “Titan” in 2014. This led to Activision asserting more control over Blizzard and bringing in CFO Armin Zerza in 2015, much to the chagrin of Blizzard employees who felt Zerza’s lack of video game industry experience hindered the company’s creative spirit.
Morhaime and Kotick also clashed on the issue of employee bonuses, with Kotick favoring rewarding only the most profitable teams, while Morhaime believed in profit sharing across the company to encourage creativity.
The final straw for Morhaime was a 2018 meeting focused on “One ABK,” aimed at unifying Activision, Blizzard, and King. Morhaime wrote an email to Kotick expressing his concern that Blizzard’s culture and independence were being eroded, stating, “It has been increasingly hard for me to provide Blizzard leadership and staff confidence that Blizzard has a stable future.”
While Morhaime initially resigned in 2017 but was persuaded to stay, his departure in 2018 was ultimately linked to these long-standing disagreements with Kotick. This revelation comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding Activision Blizzard, which faced a lawsuit in 2021 alleging a “frat boy culture” of harassment and discrimination against women.
With the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft and Kotick’s subsequent departure, it remains to be seen how the company will navigate its future, but the book’s insights shed light on the complex dynamics that have shaped Blizzard’s history and the challenges it faces going forward.
