Thu Sep 26 13:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Bentley Rethinks EV Plans, Pushing Full Electric Transition to Mid-2030s

**Crewe, UK** – Bentley, the British luxury automaker, has announced a shift in its electrification strategy, pushing back its target for becoming a fully electric brand to the mid-2030s. This decision comes as the company observes a slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles in the luxury segment.

Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, who took the helm in July, revealed in an interview with Car and Driver that luxury car buyers are still favoring gasoline engines, either as a standalone powertrain or in combination with plug-in hybrid technology.

While the automaker remains committed to launching its first electric vehicle in late 2026, it will now prioritize introducing plug-in hybrid technology across its entire lineup, starting with the updated Continental GT and Flying Spur models.

Instead of replacing its existing lineup with EVs, Bentley plans to offer a wider range of models with plug-in hybrid options.

Walliser acknowledged that there might still be a place for models powered solely by gasoline engines, especially in low-volume special editions or if carbon-neutral e-fuels become widely available.

This shift in strategy contrasts with the plans of rival luxury brands such as Rolls-Royce, which is expected to launch an electric SUV and sedan alongside its Spectre electric coupe. Aston Martin is also developing several EVs, though the automaker has hinted at potential delays.

Bentley’s revised timeline for full electrification reflects the evolving market landscape, with the company prioritizing customer preferences and market trends.
