Thu Sep 26 15:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Nova Scotia’s Top Health Official Works Remotely from Ontario, Sparking Controversy

Nova Scotia’s Health Minister Michelle Thompson defended the decision to renew Janet Davidson’s contract as administrator of Nova Scotia Health, despite Davidson working remotely from Ontario. This decision has sparked controversy, with opposition leaders questioning the effectiveness of leading a healthcare system from another province.

Davidson, who moved to Ontario in July, earns nearly $200,000 a year in her role. While Thompson maintains that Davidson’s remote work arrangement won’t impact her performance, citing “virtual options,” opposition leaders disagree.

“If you are going to lead our health-care system, you have to know what’s happening on the ground,” said Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, emphasizing the need for in-person interaction with healthcare professionals and patients.

The NDP Leader, Claudia Chender, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the hypocrisy of the government’s return-to-work directive for civil servants while exempting Davidson from the requirement.

Thompson asserted that Davidson’s arrangement is consistent with the government’s return-to-work policy, citing the need for flexibility in certain roles.

However, the opposition’s concerns raise questions about the effectiveness of leading a province’s healthcare system remotely, especially during a period of significant challenges. The debate is likely to continue as the government navigates the complex landscape of healthcare delivery in Nova Scotia.
