**New York, United Nations** – As tensions escalate in the Middle East, world leaders gathered at the United Nations on Tuesday, pleading with Israel to avoid a full-scale war in Lebanon. The appeal comes amidst reports of heavy Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, with Lebanese authorities claiming over 550 deaths, including 50 children.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned the situation in Lebanon is “on the brink,” echoing concerns expressed by many leaders. While acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself, President Charles Michel of the European Council cautioned against inflicting collective punishment on civilians.
US President Joe Biden, while acknowledging the escalating situation, stressed that a diplomatic solution remains possible and is the “only path to lasting security,” allowing residents from both countries to return home safely. However, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib expressed disappointment with Biden’s remarks, deeming them insufficient to address the crisis.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was particularly critical of Israel, accusing the country of dragging the entire region into war. He condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, calling it “the world’s largest graveyard for children and women” due to Israeli attacks.
Amidst the escalating conflict, efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza have so far been unsuccessful. While Qatar has been mediating, they accuse Israel of obstructing talks, with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani stating that there is “no Israeli partner for peace” under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Meanwhile, the ongoing crisis has highlighted deep divisions at the UN, with many countries condemning Israel’s actions while others defend its right to defend itself. The situation in Lebanon and Gaza continues to be a major concern for the international community, with the potential for further escalation looming large.
