Wed Sep 25 07:49:32 UTC 2024: ## UN Chief Warns of “Purgatory of Polarity” as Biden Asserts Center Holds

**NEW YORK** – The opening of the UN General Assembly saw contrasting speeches from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and US President Joe Biden, highlighting differing perspectives on the global order.

Guterres painted a bleak picture of a world in “purgatory,” caught between a fading unipolar order and an emerging multipolar world. He cited the Russian invasion of Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, and a lack of international cooperation as evidence of instability. He argued that the UN, designed in the aftermath of WWII, is no longer equipped to handle the challenges of a changing world, urging a revamp of the organization’s structure.

Biden, in his final address to the assembly, offered a more optimistic outlook, claiming that “the center has held” despite numerous global crises. He pointed to the international response to the Ukraine invasion, the fight against climate change, and the global collaboration against COVID-19 as evidence of a strong global community. While acknowledging the challenges of extremism and cynicism, Biden emphasized the importance of working together to overcome them.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, speaking before Biden, echoed Guterres’ concerns about the UN’s effectiveness, calling for a comprehensive reform of the organization. He slammed the UN’s inability to resolve conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and proposed a joint six-point plan with China for peace talks.

Lula also criticized the lack of gender balance in UN leadership, noting the absence of a female Secretary-General throughout its 79-year history.

Biden’s address marked his final speech to the UN before stepping down in January. He used the opportunity to reflect on his time in office, emphasizing the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of reconciliation, citing the improved relationship between the US and Vietnam as an example.

The contrasting views expressed by Guterres and Biden highlight the complexities of the current global landscape, and the need for strong leadership and international cooperation to address the challenges of a shifting world order.
