Wed Sep 25 09:37:00 UTC 2024: ## British Troops on Standby for Potential Lebanon Evacuation Amidst Rising Tensions

**Cyprus, 25 September 2024:** The UK is bolstering its military presence in Cyprus, deploying an additional 700 troops to RAF Akrotiri base in anticipation of a possible evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon. This move comes as the situation in the region escalates, with growing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

The additional troops join hundreds already stationed at the base, one of two maintained by the UK on the island since its independence in 1960. The strategic location of Cyprus, just a short distance from Lebanon, makes it a prime staging post for any evacuation effort.

RAF Akrotiri boasts a range of capabilities, including aircraft such as RAF Typhoons and Puma helicopters, as well as the capacity to house a large number of troops. The base is also within easy reach of the Lebanese coast, allowing for helicopter transport to and from ships.

The deployment comes as the UK government monitors the volatile situation in Lebanon closely. Should airspace around Beirut airport close, a military evacuation might become the only option for British citizens. Sir Peter Ricketts, former government national security adviser, urged individuals needing to leave Lebanon to do so now, as airlines may cease operations if the situation worsens.

Two British warships are already in the region and are ready to be deployed in any evacuation operation. Border Force and Foreign Office officials will also be involved in supporting the military effort. While no decision on an evacuation has been made yet, the UK is prepared to act quickly and decisively should the need arise.
