**WASHINGTON** – Republican vice presidential candidate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, is lagging behind his Democratic counterpart, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, in terms of voter favorability, according to a new poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Both Vance and Walz, relatively unknown figures prior to their nominations this summer, will face off in next week’s vice-presidential debate. The poll highlights a challenge for the Republican ticket as early voting begins in several states.
The survey found that negative perceptions of Vance are more widespread than positive ones. Roughly half of registered voters hold an unfavorable view of Vance, while only a quarter view him favorably. Walz, on the other hand, enjoys a more positive image, with 40% of voters holding a favorable opinion.
This disparity extends to both candidates’ base support, with 70% of Democrats viewing Walz positively compared to 60% of Republicans supporting Vance. Notably, Walz outperforms Vance in favorability among both men and women.
While Walz enjoys a stronger standing, he still faces challenges within some key Democratic demographics. For instance, only half of Black adults view Walz favorably compared to three-quarters who have a positive opinion of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Overall, neither vice-presidential candidate eclipses the popularity of their respective presidential running mates, Harris and former President Donald Trump. Additionally, both remain less well-known than the presidential nominees, even among traditional party base groups. This suggests that their popularity could fluctuate as their national profiles rise.
The poll, conducted between September 12th and 16th, surveyed 1,771 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
