Wed Sep 25 18:53:53 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Batters Under Red Alert As Heavy Rains Pummel City

**Mumbai, India** – A red alert has been issued for Mumbai and surrounding districts, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting extremely heavy rainfall until Thursday morning. The city’s financial district has been experiencing heavy showers since afternoon, with Mulund and its surrounding areas bearing the brunt of the downpour.

The IMD upgraded its orange alert to red, effective until 8:30 am on Thursday. Their latest warning issued at 5:30 pm forecasts “extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places very likely” in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.

The coastal districts of Palghar and Sindhudurg are under an orange alert, with “heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places very likely.”

Waterlogging in low-lying areas has led to heavy traffic congestion and poor visibility on the roads. Suburban train services, crucial for Mumbai’s transportation, have also been affected by the downpour, causing delays for commuters.
