**Tyre, Lebanon** – Amidst a relentless wave of Israeli airstrikes, thousands of Lebanese families are fleeing their homes in the south, seeking refuge in the north of the country. Emergency centers are overwhelmed, with reports of widespread destruction and civilian casualties.
The Israeli military claims its airstrikes target Hezbollah weapons stores, fighters, and commanders, alleging the militant group hides in residential areas and uses civilians as human shields. However, residents like Abu Ali, whose village was completely destroyed except for his house, vehemently deny this, insisting the strikes hit only civilian areas.
One of the most devastating strikes targeted a house in the Bekaa Valley, killing a young mother, Dina Daarwiche, and her son. Her husband and other child remain in critical condition. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) also confirmed the death of one of their workers, Ali Basma, in an airstrike, adding to the growing number of civilian casualties.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that the death toll from Monday and Tuesday’s airstrikes has reached nearly 600, including many women and children. The UNHCR has issued a statement condemning the strikes and calling for de-escalation, emphasizing the need to protect civilians, including aid workers.
The situation on the ground is chaotic, with families struggling to cope with the displacement and lack of resources. Emergency workers in Tyre describe a desperate scene, with many forced to sleep in gardens, beaches, and cars without basic necessities.
Despite the escalating conflict, Hezbollah continues to retaliate with increased attacks on Israel, including the first use of a ballistic missile targeting Tel Aviv suburbs.
With a ceasefire in Gaza unlikely and Israel vowing to intensify its campaign against Hezbollah, Lebanon faces a bleak future, marked by continued violence and displacement. The international community is urging both sides to de-escalate the conflict and prioritize the protection of civilians.
