**WASHINGTON** – The Trump campaign has issued a statement claiming that US intelligence has warned of “real and specific” threats from Iran to assassinate Donald Trump. The campaign alleges that these threats have escalated in recent months and are aimed at destabilizing the US and sowing chaos during the upcoming election.
Campaign communications director Steven Cheung said in the statement that President Trump was briefed on the intelligence by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Cheung added that law enforcement agencies across all levels are working to ensure Trump’s safety and a free and fair election.
While the campaign did not provide specifics on the nature of the alleged threats, it comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran. This statement follows previous reports in July that authorities were investigating a potential Iranian plot to assassinate Trump, which Iran vehemently denied.
The US has also accused Iran of hacking Trump’s campaign and seeking to influence the 2024 election. These accusations, too, were denied by Iran.
These allegations come as the US election draws closer. The Trump campaign and the campaign of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris have both reported being targeted by foreign hackers.
The US election is scheduled for November 5, with polls currently showing a tight race between Trump and Harris.
