Wed Sep 25 02:11:50 UTC 2024: ## Two Passengers Injured During United Airlines Flight Maneuver to Avoid Collision
**San Francisco, CA** – Two passengers on a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco suffered injuries during a maneuver to avoid a potential midair collision. The incident occurred last Thursday at 31,000 feet, approximately 70 miles north of San Francisco.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Boeing 757-200, flight UA 2428, received a traffic collision avoidance system resolution advisory (RA) from the Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center Airspace. The pilots responded by slowing the plane’s descent to avoid a potential collision with another aircraft at a lower altitude.
One passenger sustained serious injuries, while another suffered minor injuries during the sudden maneuver. The airline stated that the seatbelt sign was on at the time of the incident, and one of the passengers was reportedly out of their seat when the plane shifted.
Audio from LiveATC.net revealed that the pilots declared a medical emergency to air traffic controllers in Oakland, reporting that a passenger may have broken an ankle and that other passengers were injured during the RA. Both injured passengers were transported to a local hospital.
The FAA is currently investigating the incident. According to FlightRadar24, a Southwest Airlines flight was approximately 3,000 feet below the United flight at the time of the event, and a SkyWest flight was about 1,000 feet lower. Pilots are required to respond immediately to collision resolution advisories, which act as a last-ditch effort to avoid midair collisions.
