Wed Sep 25 04:26:38 UTC 2024: ## “Tumbbad” Rises From the Shadows, Becomes Box Office Hit After Re-Release

The Hindi horror film “Tumbbad,” which initially struggled to find an audience in 2018, has experienced a remarkable resurgence following its re-release earlier this month. The film, directed by Rahi Anil Barve, has already surpassed its original box office earnings, raking in over $2.6 million in just two weekends.

“Tumbbad,” known for its unique visual storytelling and exploration of themes like greed and mythology, found its niche audience over time and has become a cult classic. The film follows a greedy village boy’s pursuit of a cursed ancestral treasure guarded by the devil. Its success is attributed to its captivating narrative, deep understanding of Indian mythology, and exceptional visuals.

The re-release of “Tumbbad” coincides with the success of another horror film, “Stree 2,” indicating a renewed interest in the genre among Hindi cinema audiences. The film also benefits from the absence of major new Hindi releases and the strong word-of-mouth following it garnered over the past six years.

The film’s success has prompted the announcement of a sequel, which will be directed by Adesh Prasad, co-director of the original film. Director Barve is currently working on the second part of his trilogy, with “Tumbbad” serving as the first installment.

“Tumbbad” is not the only re-release making waves at the box office. “Veer Zara,” a romantic drama starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, has also seen a resurgence in popularity, earning nearly $400,000 in ten days after its re-release.

However, not all re-releases have been met with success. The latest Hindi release, “Yudhra,” starring Sidhant Chaturvedi and Raghav Juyal, has underperformed, earning just $1.3 million in its first four days.
