**WASHINGTON** – Former President Donald Trump was briefed Tuesday by top U.S. intelligence officials on specific threats from Iran to assassinate him, according to a Trump campaign spokesperson. The briefing, which occurred earlier this day, focused on “real and specific threats” from Iran aimed at destabilizing the U.S. and causing chaos.
According to the spokesperson, Steven Cheung, the intelligence community believes these threats have intensified in recent months. Law enforcement agencies across the board are working to protect Trump and ensure the upcoming election is free from interference.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed the briefing but declined to provide specifics. The Iranian mission to the U.N. has not yet responded to a request for comment.
This briefing comes after increased security measures around Trump earlier this year following intelligence indicating a potential Iranian assassination plot. These security measures were put in place after an incident in July where an individual attempted to attack Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Officials at the time denied any connection between the Iranian plot and the attack.
Iran, through its state media, dismissed previous allegations of an assassination plot as “unsubstantiated and malicious.” Trump has previously stated that he was refusing intelligence briefings to avoid being accused of leaks, but it is unclear if he has resumed regular briefings.
Another incident in September saw a suspect arrested for attempting to assassinate Trump in Florida. This individual was charged with attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
In a related development, the Senate unanimously passed a bill Tuesday that would provide the same level of protection to major presidential candidates like Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as President Joe Biden currently receives. The bill now heads to the White House for President Biden’s signature.
The Trump campaign previously accused Iran of hacking attempts in June, which were later confirmed by U.S. agencies. More recently, intelligence agencies alleged that Iranian actors hacked into Trump’s campaign and sent documents to associates of the Biden campaign. Iran has vehemently denied these accusations.
