**Paris, France** – The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a new report outlining a roadmap to achieve the ambitious energy goals set at COP28 in Dubai last year. The UAE Consensus, signed by nearly 200 countries, aims to triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
The IEA report, “From Taking Stock to Taking Action: How to implement the COP28 energy goals,” emphasizes that achieving these targets requires a significant shift in policy and investment. Key measures include:
* **Massive Grid Expansion:** Building and modernizing 25 million kilometers of electricity grids by 2030, equivalent to wrapping the globe 600 times.
* **Enhanced Energy Storage:** A 15-fold increase in battery storage capacity, reaching 1,500 gigawatts (GW) to ensure grid reliability and manage renewable energy fluctuations.
* **Prioritizing Efficiency:** Doubling energy efficiency globally, which would reduce emissions by 6.5 billion tonnes and cut energy costs by nearly 10%.
* **Targeted Approaches:** Advanced economies should focus on electrification through electric vehicles and heat pumps, while emerging economies need to strengthen cooling equipment standards and expand access to clean cooking supplies.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stressed the urgency of implementation. “The COP28 energy goals are the North Star for what the energy sector needs to do. We need fit-for-purpose grids, energy storage, and faster electrification to ensure the clean energy transition happens quickly and securely.”
If governments successfully implement these policies, the next decade could be a tipping point for clean energy, with renewables becoming the dominant source of power globally. The IEA report serves as a roadmap for turning climate pledges into concrete action, urging countries to translate the UAE Consensus into updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
