Wed Sep 25 07:14:00 UTC 2024: ## Thunder Bay Embraces Winter with Fat Bike Trail Expansion

While fat biking may have seen a brief surge in popularity nationwide, it has settled into a more regional phenomenon, with hot spots emerging in cold climates like the Upper Midwest, Alaska, and Canada. One such area is Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is considered a leader in fat bike sales per capita.

The town, known for its location on the north shore of Lake Superior and its proximity to the US border, is already home to a thriving mountain biking scene centered around the Trowbridge Forest trail system.

Now, this trail system is set to receive a major boost, thanks to a $510,000 investment focused on winter infrastructure. This funding will be used to expand the existing 45km of trails, including five kilometers of new trails, and to purchase grooming equipment for both fat bike and cross-country ski trails. This investment aims to ensure year-round accessibility and attract winter tourism, especially fat bikers.

Paul Pepe, manager of Tourism Thunder Bay, sees this as an opportunity to expand the town’s winter tourism offerings. While the success of attracting fat bike tourism in a destination known for frigid temperatures remains to be seen, Thunder Bay is positioning itself as a winter wonderland for adventure seekers.
