**Washington, D.C. –** The FDA has reached a significant milestone with the approval of its newly reorganized **Human Foods Program (HFP)**, a major overhaul designed to enhance food safety, efficiency, and responsiveness to modern challenges.
This transformation, effective October 1, 2024, follows a critical review of the agency’s food safety practices, highlighted by a 2022 report titled “The FDA’s Food Failure” by former Food Safety News writer Helena Bottemiller Evich.
The new HFP, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods Jim Jones, consolidates food safety, chemical safety, and nutrition activities under one umbrella. This unified approach aims to streamline operations and create a more nimble agency, better equipped to handle the complexities of modern food systems.
According to the FDA, the HFP will “notably enhance the agency’s ability to oversee and protect the human food supply.” The reorganization is intended to address the evolving landscape of the food industry, including the emergence of new technologies, globalization, and climate change.
The FDA’s restructuring plan was developed after thorough review of the Reagan-Udall Foundation evaluation, an internal review of the agency’s infant formula response, and feedback from stakeholders. The proposal underwent a formal external review process and received final approval in May 2024.
The FDA’s reorganization is expected to improve its efficiency, responsiveness, and ability to protect the public from foodborne illness and unsafe food products.
