**New York, NY** – A recent survey by U.S. News & World Report reveals that Americans are struggling to get a good night’s sleep, with stress levels soaring due to a variety of factors. The biggest culprit? The rising cost of living, impacting 74% of Americans’ sleep patterns.
The survey, which polled 1,200 American adults, found that worries about finances, climate change, and the upcoming election topped the list of bedtime anxieties. The results were similar to 2022, with the Russia-Ukraine war taking the last spot on the list.
“This is often top of mind for people, including many of my patients,” said Jonathan Alpert, a Manhattan and Washington D.C. psychotherapist and author of “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days.” “As the prices of goods and services continue to increase, so do people’s worries about making ends meet.”
Dr. Chris Mosunic, Chief Clinical Officer at Calm in San Francisco, added that “it’s no surprise that the election is one of the top worries keeping Americans up at night.” He emphasized the importance of practicing healthy habits to unwind at night, especially during times of heightened anxiety.
Experts also highlighted the importance of consistent sleep schedules, noting that inconsistent bedtimes can lead to negative health consequences like heart disease, weight gain, and cognitive decline. Dr. Chris Winter, a neurologist and sleep medicine specialist, urged people to avoid screens in the bedroom, as the blue light emitted from electronic devices can interfere with sleep.
The survey serves as a reminder that sleep is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. In a world filled with stress and anxieties, prioritizing sleep hygiene is essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
