Wed Sep 25 04:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Elon Musk’s X Faces Multi-Billion Dollar Fines from EU Over Content Moderation Rules

**Brussels, Belgium** – X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is facing potential fines of up to $6 billion from the European Union for allegedly violating new content moderation rules. The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) requires online platforms to take more responsibility for combating harmful content, and X is being investigated for failing to comply.

The EU could levy the hefty penalties against not just X, but the entire business empire of Elon Musk, including Tesla and SpaceX, if it determines that Musk is exerting “decisive influence” over the platform. This could be a landmark case for the DSA, which has not yet been tested in court.

The investigation began in December 2022 and stems from accusations that X has misled users with its blue checkmark system for certified accounts, lacked transparency in its advertising practices, and failed to provide researchers access to platform data.

While the EU’s tech enforcer, Thierry Breton, initially took a hardline stance against X, his departure this month has led to some speculation about a possible softening of the EU’s position. However, the EU insists that its stance remains firm, and the new tech chief, Henna Virkkunen, will likely be equally rigorous in enforcing the DSA.

X can still avoid the massive fines by making changes in accordance with the EU’s demands. The company has access to the EU’s file and can defend itself against the commission’s findings.

If the EU does decide to impose fines, it is unlikely to pursue the maximum amount, but the mere threat of such penalties could be enough to force Musk to comply with the EU’s content moderation rules.

The potential clash between Musk and the EU could set a precedent for how tech giants are held accountable for their content moderation practices and the implications of the new DSA.
