The recent Israeli strikes on Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah fighters, have resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians, including Fatima Abdallah Jaafar, a 10-year-old girl, and Bilal Kanj, an 11-year-old boy.
Fatima was killed when a pager-bomb detonated in her kitchen, her death a stark reminder of the human cost of Israel’s covert operations. While Western journalists and security experts “marveled at the complexity” of the Israeli operation, they largely ignored the innocent lives lost, particularly children, who are frequently dismissed as “collateral damage”.
Artur Wilcynski, a former Canadian ambassador and senior security official, exemplified this callous disregard. He praised the Israeli operation as “brilliant,” celebrating the deaths of Fatima and Bilal as a “price to pay” for Hezbollah’s actions. He even posted a cartoon GIF depicting a “beep beep” sound, further trivializing the tragic loss of life.
Wilcynski’s blatant insensitivity sparked widespread outrage, prompting him to resign from his position as a special advisor on anti-Semitism at the University of Ottawa. His resignation, however, came after significant backlash, raising serious questions about the moral compass of those supporting Israel’s military actions.
The deaths of Fatima, Bilal, and countless other children highlight the devastating human cost of conflict. Their lives, cut short by a “sophisticated” operation, serve as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of security and strategic objectives cannot come at the expense of innocent lives.
