Wed Sep 25 04:25:03 UTC 2024: ## Thailand Makes History: King Signs Landmark Same-Sex Marriage Bill into Law

**Bangkok, Thailand** – Thailand has become the first Southeast Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage, with King Maha Vajiralongkorn signing a historic marriage equality bill into law on Tuesday. The landmark legislation will grant full legal, financial, and medical rights to LGBTQ+ couples, including adoption and inheritance rights.

The bill, which passed through both houses of parliament earlier this year, will come into effect in 120 days, meaning same-sex couples can begin registering their marriages in January 2024.

Activists hailed the move as a “monumental step” towards equality, celebrating the culmination of years of campaigning and advocacy. “We are all delighted and excited. We’ve been fighting for our rights for over 10 years, and now it’s finally happening,” said Siritata Ninlapruek, an LGBTQ activist.

The law’s passage comes as a significant development in a country that has long been known for its relative tolerance towards the LGBTQ community. While public opinion polls have indicated overwhelming support for same-sex marriage, Thailand still retains traditional and conservative values, and LGBTQ+ individuals face ongoing discrimination in everyday life.

The law’s implementation is expected to spark nationwide celebrations, with LGBTQ+ rights advocate Waaddao Chumaporn planning a mass wedding for over 1,000 couples in Bangkok on January 22nd, the first day the law takes effect.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her support for the new law, writing on social media, “Thank you for the support from all sectors. It is a joint fight for everyone.”

Thailand joins a growing list of countries around the world that have legalized marriage for all, including Taiwan, Nepal, and most recently, the Netherlands in 2001. The law’s passage signifies a significant step towards greater equality and inclusion for LGBTQ+ individuals in Thailand and across Southeast Asia.
