Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a U.S. Marine who survived the terror attack at Abbey Gate in Afghanistan during the chaotic withdrawal in 2021, has publicly called for accountability from Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running for president.
In an interview with the Daily Caller, Vargas-Andrews, who lost friends in the attack, expressed frustration over the administration’s handling of the withdrawal and their failure to reach out to him or other survivors.
“You need to answer for what you’ve done, for what everyone’s done, hold yourself accountable,” he said, addressing Harris directly. “You need to hold everyone in our nation and our military that’s accountable.”
Vargas-Andrews acknowledged his belief that the administration will likely not take responsibility for their actions. “I know that they’ll never do that,” he said. “But, it’s the right thing to do.”
The Marine’s statement comes as the anniversary of the Abbey Gate attack approaches. The attack resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and over 170 Afghan civilians. The Biden administration has been widely criticized for its handling of the withdrawal, with many pointing to a lack of planning and communication.
Vargas-Andrews’ call for accountability is a stark reminder of the human cost of the Afghanistan withdrawal and the lasting impact it continues to have on those directly affected.
