**Ruapehu, New Zealand:** The Ruapehu District Council recently conducted a successful civil defence training exercise, simulating the impacts of a fictional cyclone. The exercise aimed to enhance staff preparedness and confidence in responding to emergencies and severe weather events.
The scenario involved various district hazards, including flooding, road closures, evacuations, and the coordination of welfare services. Council staff, alongside external agencies like St John Ambulance and Cruise FM, tested their response systems and communication capabilities.
Emergency Management Officer Andy Chambers highlighted the increasing frequency of severe weather events in the Ruapehu district due to climate change. The region also faces the constant threat of volcanic eruptions and lahars.
“As the frontline responders in times of crisis, we need to ensure every staff member is equipped with the knowledge and capability to act swiftly and confidently in the face of disasters,” Chambers said.
The exercise served as a valuable learning experience, identifying areas for improvement within the council’s emergency response protocols.
“No matter how many times you’ve been through an emergency, ongoing training is critically important,” Chambers concluded. “We learned a lot and identified several key areas for improvement.”
The council’s commitment to regular training ensures the Ruapehu community is prepared for any potential emergency.
