Wed Sep 25 03:22:06 UTC 2024: ## L&T Eyes Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for Green Energy

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading Indian conglomerate, is exploring the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) to provide green energy solutions. L&T’s Wholetime Director and President-Energy, Subramanian Sarma, confirmed their interest in SMRs, highlighting the company’s “core capability” in this domain. L&T is currently engaging with potential technology providers to explore collaboration possibilities.

The company is particularly well-suited for SMR development given its expertise in modularisation, having built modular structures for various sectors, including oil and gas. Once L&T secures the necessary technology, it is confident in its ability to manufacture the reactors and modularize the manufacturing process.

SMRs, also known as Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) in India, are gaining global attention as a source of clean energy. The Indian government has expressed its intent to partner with the private sector for BSR development, as highlighted in the recent budget speech. Various industries, notably the steel sector, are actively exploring the potential of SMRs for green energy production.

While L&T is actively engaged in discussions with overseas technology providers, Sarma stressed that these discussions are still in their early stages. The company is prioritizing the selection of the “right technology” for its SMR development efforts.
