**Chennai, India:** Over 1,000 workers at Samsung’s home appliance factory in Tamil Nadu, India, have been on strike for three weeks, demanding higher wages and union recognition. The strike, one of the largest in India in recent years, has cast a shadow over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative aimed at boosting electronics production.
While Samsung claims its workers earn an average of 25,000 rupees ($300) per month, almost twice the average salary of similar workers in the region, striking workers, led by the CITU labor group, argue they earn just 25,000 rupees and demand a raise to 36,000 rupees ($430) per month over three years.
Samsung has maintained that its workers receive overtime pay, allowances, and a safe working environment. They have also stated their willingness to engage with workers to address their grievances and encourage them to return to work.
The strike has disrupted operations at the factory, which contributes significantly to Samsung’s Indian revenue, estimated at $12 billion annually. The Tamil Nadu labor secretary has confirmed ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute.
This situation highlights the increasing pressure on multinational companies to address fair labor practices and wage demands in India, particularly as the country strives to attract foreign investment and expand its manufacturing sector.
