**Tokyo, Japan** – For the first time in its nearly four-decade history, the beloved “Legend of Zelda” franchise will see Princess Zelda take the leading role. In “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom”, releasing this Thursday, Zelda will break free from her traditional damsel-in-distress role and become the heroine, saving the kingdom of Hyrule.
The game, directed by Tomomi Sano, the first woman to helm the franchise, sees Link, the usual protagonist, captured by evil forces. This leaves Zelda to use her magical wand and newfound bravery to overcome challenges and rescue her kingdom.
While Zelda has been playable in other titles like the “Super Smash Bros.” series and a 1993 CD-i game, “Echoes of Wisdom” marks her official solo debut.
“I was waiting for the right proposal that would really do justice to Zelda,” stated Eiji Aonuma, the series producer for nearly 20 years. The idea for Zelda’s starring role arose when the development team struggled to balance Link’s swordsmanship with the magical wand.
Fans are thrilled with the change. “Zelda being the main character will change her image to something incredibly brave and cool,” shared Saki, a 24-year-old Japanese student. Abby Murphy, a tourist from New York, echoed this sentiment, adding, “I’ve always wanted to play Zelda.”
Musicologist Fanny Rebillard, author of a book on the “Zelda” soundtrack, said Zelda’s prominence has been steadily growing in recent games. “She’s no longer a figure to be rescued stuck in a castle, she has her own story,” Rebillard explained.
“Echoes of Wisdom” is expected to be a more modest experience compared to the massive success of the previous game, “Tears of the Kingdom”, which sold over 10 million copies in its first three days. However, it could serve as a test for future Zelda games, potentially leading to larger-scale adventures featuring the now-heroic princess.
This shift follows the recent success of “Princess Peach: Showtime”, where Princess Peach from the Mario universe gets her own adventure after starring as a warrior in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
“I don’t think there’s a desire to be ideological (on Nintendo’s part), but simply to offer different games,” stated Florent Gorges, author of “The History of Nintendo”.
With Princess Zelda stepping into the spotlight, the future of the “Legend of Zelda” series promises a new era of exciting adventures, proving that even in a world of fantasy, the power of a heroine can change everything.
