**London, UK** – A recent Tech Monitor and AMD roundtable discussion in London brought together senior representatives from the UK public sector to explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically generative AI (GenAI). The event revealed both similarities and unique challenges facing public sector AI adoption compared to the private sector.
While there’s a shared interest in leveraging AI to improve efficiency and productivity, the public sector faces additional scrutiny regarding public trust and outcomes. Participants emphasized that cost-cutting initiatives alone are insufficient, and projects must demonstrably benefit citizens. For example, using IoT sensors to detect mould in homes can be beneficial but must address potential privacy concerns.
The discussion also highlighted the growing use of GenAI in public sector applications. Attendees identified two distinct approaches: building bespoke, open-source tools and leveraging existing off-the-shelf software with GenAI add-ons. Examples include Redbox, a co-pilot developed to summarize ministerial paperwork, and a project to deliver SaaS-based AI functionality for backend HR and finance processes.
Regarding infrastructure, the cloud remains the preferred choice for most due to cost-effectiveness. However, concerns about latency, security, and data sovereignty might push some towards private hosting or hybrid cloud solutions.
The roundtable concluded that modernization of network, application, and data infrastructure is crucial before embarking on full-fledged AI projects. By modernizing, public sector organizations can reduce energy consumption, manage compute power more effectively, lower costs, and make a compelling case for AI investments.
The discussion underscored the need for ongoing dialogue and collaboration to overcome the challenges and harness the potential of AI in the public sector. As one attendee put it, “How do we improve residents’ outcomes using AI (and ideally do it on the cheap)?” The answer, it seems, lies in a thoughtful and transparent approach that prioritizes both efficiency and public benefit.
