Wed Sep 25 01:44:09 UTC 2024: ## Hurricane Helene Threatens Florida with Major Landfall

**Tallahassee, FL** – Potential Tropical Storm Nine has strengthened into Tropical Storm Helene and is forecast to intensify into a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday night.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee warns of potentially catastrophic impacts, including a life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet, significant wind damage, and heavy rainfall extending as far inland as Kentucky and Indiana.

Meteorologist Israel Gonzalez from the NWS Tallahassee office described the situation as “pretty significant” and confirmed the storm is expected to maintain its strength until landfall.

The Tampa area is also expected to experience a significant storm surge, with forecasts predicting up to 8 feet.

Hurricane Helene could be the most powerful storm to hit the United States this year, fueled by exceptionally warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

John Cangialosi, a senior specialist at the National Hurricane Center, explained the aggressive forecast, stating, “We’re trying to get ahead of the possible rapid intensification before it gets to Florida.”

In anticipation of the storm’s arrival, President Biden declared a state of emergency for Florida, followed by Governor Ron DeSantis declaring an emergency for 61 of the state’s 67 counties. Ten counties have issued evacuation orders or advisories. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also declared a state of emergency.

With Helene’s unusually large size and rapid movement, authorities are urging residents in affected areas to prepare for the storm’s potential impacts and follow official advisories.
