Greenvale, Victoria – Local students are getting their hands dirty and helping to improve the environment thanks to a unique initiative from the Mickleham Road upgrade project. As part of their commitment to “greening Greenvale,” the project team has distributed 800 “plantable postcards” to students at Mary Queen of Heaven Primary School and Aitken College.
The postcards, distributed during National Biodiversity Month, each contain seeds of the native lemon-scented tea tree, a fast-growing, drought-tolerant species that thrives in sunny locations. Students are encouraged to plant the seeds at home and share their progress via a QR code included on the postcard.
“We were delighted to partner with local schools and provide this opportunity for students to learn about native plants and contribute to a greener Greenvale,” said Dipal Sorathia, program director of Major Road Projects Victoria.
Greenvale MP Iwan Walters praised the initiative, stating that the postcards will “teach kids lifelong lessons about the environment and sustainability” while boosting the area with more native trees.
This educational initiative is just one aspect of the Mickleham Road upgrade project, which aims to improve traffic flow by adding extra lanes between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard. The project is now set to be completed six months ahead of schedule in January 2025.
Stage one of the upgrade includes replacing the roundabout at Somerton and Mickleham roads with a traffic light intersection, adding priority bus lanes, and constructing new shared walking and cycling paths. Planning for stage two, which will extend the upgrade to Craigieburn Road, is currently underway. The project is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.
