Wed Sep 25 07:48:47 UTC 2024: ## Iran Expresses Grave Concerns over Escalating Tensions in West Asia
**New York, September 24, 2024:** Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has voiced deep concerns over the escalating tensions in West Asia, blaming Israel’s “acts of terror and aggression.” In a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Pezeshkian emphasized that the situation is “a serious threat to regional peace and security.”
Pezeshkian pointed to the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on the first day of his presidency, which he described as a “provocative act” by Israel. While highlighting Iran’s restraint in preventing further escalation, he criticized the Israeli government for its ongoing war on Gaza, which he deemed “genocidal,” resulting in the deaths of over 41,400 Palestinians. He further condemned Israel’s expansion of its aggression to Lebanon.
“We are deeply worried about the expansion of the conflict across the entire region,” Pezeshkian stated.
The Iranian president also brought up the recent coal mine explosion in Tabas, attributing the tragedy to the effects of unfair sanctions imposed on Iran, which have hindered the import of necessary mining equipment.
Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to pursuing peace and security in West Asia through cooperation with neighboring governments, including those in the Persian Gulf region. He reiterated Iran’s longstanding policy of non-proliferation, declaring that “Iran is in no way seeking nuclear weapons.”
UN Secretary General Guterres expressed hope for progress in Iran’s development and for the establishment of peace and security in West Asia during Pezeshkian’s tenure. He acknowledged the importance of ending the ongoing war in Gaza, condemning Israel’s actions as “genocide” and calling for the restoration of Palestinian rights.
Guterres stressed the need to prevent Lebanon from becoming another Gaza, urging an end to Israeli violence and settlement construction. He expressed satisfaction with the recent improvements in relations between Iran and Persian Gulf countries.
