A recent OzBargain forum discussion highlighted the importance of understanding USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 technology when considering a high-speed USB-C drive. The drive in question boasts a potential 20Gbps transfer rate, but this speed is only achievable with very specific USB ports.
The user who purchased the drive, “Larsson,” found that it delivered impressive read/write speeds of around 2000 MBps on his PC with a Z690 motherboard. However, he cautioned other users to be aware that the drive’s advertised speed requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 port, which is uncommon on most devices.
“20gbps ONLY works with USB3.2 Gen 2 x2,” Larsson stated. “Which is very rare on devices. So don’t expect this to just work anywhere.”
Further discussion revealed that while USB is backward compatible and the drive will work in any USB port, the speed will be limited by the port’s capabilities. For example, an older USB 3 port will only achieve speeds of 5Gbps.
This illustrates the importance of researching the specifications of both the drive and the device it will be connected to. While the advertised 20Gbps speed is alluring, users should be aware of its limitations and ensure their device is compatible before making a purchase.
