Wed Sep 25 06:48:00 UTC 2024: ## Malaysia Boasts High 5G Speeds, but Coverage Lags Behind

**Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – September 25, 2024** – Malaysia has secured the second spot for the fastest 5G download speeds in the Asia Pacific region, clocking in at an average of 295.5 Mbps, according to a new report by Opensignal. This places Malaysia just behind South Korea, which holds the top spot with 427.5 Mbps.

The report, titled “Benchmarking The Asia Pacific Mobile Network Experience,” highlights Malaysia’s impressive 5G performance, attributing it to the country’s robust wholesale 5G network. Malaysia also ranks third in terms of 5G upload speeds, with an average of 34 Mbps.

Despite these positive network speed metrics, the report reveals a gap in 5G availability and coverage. While Malaysia boasts a top-five ranking for 5G availability in the region at 31.8%, its overall coverage experience falls short, ranking tenth with a score of 2.6. This indicates that further efforts are needed to ensure broader and more consistent 5G coverage across the country.

“Malaysia is among the countries recording the largest speed uplift between 4G and 5G in Asia Pacific,” stated the report, adding that over 37% of Malaysia’s total connections are now 5G.

While the country’s current 5G infrastructure performance is noteworthy, Opensignal points out that Malaysian mobile network operators (MNOs) are now bidding to build a second 5G network. This competition is likely to further drive innovation and improvements in 5G connectivity.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil recently confirmed the government’s commitment to expanding 5G coverage across the country. The government has already established 7,191 5G sites nationwide, achieving an 81.9% coverage in populated areas.
