Wed Sep 25 03:35:41 UTC 2024: ## Ohio Senate Candidate Sparks Outrage with Remarks on Abortion and Women

Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno is facing intense backlash after making controversial comments about suburban women and abortion. During a town hall in Warren County, Moreno suggested that many suburban women are single-issue voters when it comes to abortion and that it’s “crazy” for women over 50 to care about abortion access.

“The left has a lot of single-issue voters,” Moreno said. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … OK. It’s a little crazy, by the way, but — especially for women that are, like, past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”

Moreno’s comments have sparked widespread condemnation, with Democrats and some Republicans criticizing his remarks as disrespectful and out of touch.

Senator Sherrod Brown, Moreno’s Democratic opponent, responded, “The people of Ohio think women should have the power to make their own health care decisions, Bernie Moreno thinks he should.”

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley tweeted, “Are you trying to lose the election? Asking for a friend. #Tonedeaf #DonLemonVibes.”

Former House Speaker John Boehner’s aide Maura Gillespie called the comments “moronic” and said, “I think that Republicans will continue to lose on this issue if they undermine women.”

Moreno’s campaign has attempted to downplay the remarks, claiming they were a tongue-in-cheek joke about his opponent and the media. However, the controversy highlights the sensitivity surrounding abortion in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s overturn and the growing importance of women’s votes in the upcoming election.

With the election approaching, it remains to be seen whether Moreno’s comments will ultimately damage his campaign or if they will be dismissed as a misstep.
