Los Angeles-based artist Joseph Olisaemeka Wilson, known for his captivating and often apocalyptic works, delves into the world of Americana, military history, and the search for truth in his recent exhibition “Songs About War.”
In a recent interview with Shaquille Heath, Wilson describes his artistic process as a constant exploration, akin to traversing a winding maze. He finds inspiration in everyday encounters, turning them into allegorical paintings that reflect his own personal experiences. His work, he says, “is the thing that I do every day,” drawing from a wide range of sources, including literature, music, and even arguments at the gas station.
Wilson’s current exhibition centers around Field General Wali Wallace, an obscure figure who served during a past conflict. The artist, who considers himself Wallace’s biographer, explores the General’s life through paintings, notes, and research, weaving together a narrative of wartime experience and the enduring power of music.
“I kind of took it as my duty,” Wilson explains of his decision to focus on Wallace. “It’s like when someone who didn’t have a voice, sometimes, they need someone to write their tale for you.”
Despite the dark themes prevalent in his work, Wilson maintains a playful and philosophical approach. He embraces the unknown, finding solace in the journey rather than seeking a definitive conclusion. He acknowledges the influence of American history and cultural heritage on his work, particularly evident in his love for Americana music and its rich narrative potential.
“I think everything, from things you read to a song or an argument you had with a guy at the gas station, could come from anything, I suppose,” says Wilson. “I’m just gonna try to do my best and try to eat healthy, and, you know, hopefully interesting things will happen.”
“Songs About War” was on view at Vielmetter Los Angeles earlier this year. Follow Joseph Olisaemeka Wilson on Instagram at @olisaemeka13.
