Larder Lake, ON – Jason Ploeger, a local resident of Larder Lake, has solved a decades-old mystery by discovering a sunken taxi cab at the bottom of the lake. For 35 years, Ploeger had been searching for the vehicle, fueled by the local legend of a taxi that went through the ice on its way to a Christmas party years ago.
While fishing in a local derby last year, Ploeger’s side-imaging sonar detected the outline of a car beneath the surface. Excited by the discovery, he returned with a team of divers who descended 15 meters into the murky waters. The divers identified the car as a 1929 REO Flying Cloud and found six bottles inside.
Ploeger later learned from the daughter of one of the passengers that the taxi was indeed on its way to a Christmas party at the Martin-Bird Mine when it hit a patch of thin ice. Luckily, all five passengers escaped safely.
The bottles recovered from the cab contained a smooth rye whiskey, one of which exploded upon surfacing due to pressure. Ploeger plans to auction off one of the intact bottles on Sept. 28 at a charity event to benefit the Friends of Larder.
The taxi cab, deemed too fragile to remove, will remain at the bottom of Larder Lake for future divers to explore. While Ploeger is relieved to have found the sunken taxi, he is not done exploring local mysteries, with plans to investigate other sunken vessels and a Second World War plane crash in the area.
