A fire broke out at the Broadwalk Urban Village in Midrand on Tuesday night, forcing the evacuation of over 130 units. Firefighters arrived to find the second floor engulfed in flames and immediately began a room-by-room search to ensure all residents were safely evacuated.
While no fatalities have been reported, some residents sustained injuries and were transported to hospital. The exact number of injured residents is currently unknown.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and will be determined once firefighting operations are completed. The City of Johannesburg has already made arrangements with the complex owners to provide alternative accommodation for the displaced residents.
In light of this incident, City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo urged residents to carefully scrutinize accommodation facilities before taking up residency and to ensure all electrical appliances are switched off after use.
