**RAF Marham, Norfolk -** The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has officially opened a brand new, £23 million kennel facility for the RAF Police’s Military Working Dogs (MWDs) at RAF Marham. This modern complex replaces an older facility, offering a more spacious and comfortable environment for both the dogs and their handlers.
The new kennels, divided into three separate blocks, provide accommodation for 48 MWDs. One block is dedicated to veterinary services, with isolation kennels for dogs receiving treatment. Another block features offices and a relaxation room for the RAF Police.
The facility boasts a range of modern features, including solar panels, plant rooms, underfloor heating, a new access road, parking, cycle storage, and loading/unloading areas. It was designed in consultation with the military’s Veterinary Services Training and Advisory Team to ensure it meets the highest standards of animal welfare.
“This new facility will provide more space and improved comfort for both MWDs and their RAF Police handlers,” said Capt Nick Davenport, Garrison Engineer. “The dogs are a key component of the security of RAF Marham and their wellbeing has been our guiding principle throughout the design and build process.”
Group Captain Wigglesworth, Station Commander RAF Marham, highlighted the importance of the MWDs in securing the station and its vital F-35B Lightning Force.
Provost Marshal (RAF) and Commander of the Air Security Force, Group Captain Samantha Bunn, stated that the new facility sets a new standard for animal welfare and handler support. “This flagship facility demonstrates the RAF’s commitment to being at the forefront of MWD care,” she added.
RAF Marham is a crucial operational base for the RAF, housing the first F35 Lightning Squadron and a variety of support functions. The MWDs and their handlers are an essential part of the station’s security provisions. This new facility ensures that these dedicated canine partners are well cared for, allowing them to continue performing their vital duties.
