**Jammu:** The BJP has accused the National Conference (NC) and Congress of distorting history and belittling the contributions of Maharaja Hari Singh, the former ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. During a press conference in Jammu on Tuesday, J&K BJP Chief Spokesperson Sunil Sethi claimed that both parties presented a negative portrayal of the Maharaja while exalting Sheikh Abdullah, the former Prime Minister of J&K.
Sethi highlighted that the Maharaja’s role was crucial in integrating J&K with India, but the NC and Cong deliberately downplayed his contributions and social reforms. He also criticized their decision to send the Maharaja into exile and prevent his return until his death.
The BJP spokesperson pointed out the irony of the NC and Cong announcing holidays for Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday and Martyr’s Day, while refusing to recognize the Maharaja’s birthday with a holiday. He challenged Rahul Gandhi and the NC to explain why the Maharaja was treated with disrespect and denied a place of honor in J&K’s history.
Sethi further stated that the BJP has recognized the Maharaja’s rightful place in history by declaring a holiday on his birthday, September 23rd.
Abhijeet Jasrotia, another BJP spokesperson, echoed the criticism, claiming that the NC and Cong have always discriminated against Jammu and its Dogras. He accused them of giving more seats to Kashmir in Lok Sabha and the Assembly despite Jammu having a larger area and population. Jasrotia also accused the NC and Cong of denying Dogra certificates to people of Jammu.
The BJP reiterated their stance that only they can safeguard the future and identity of Jammu, while highlighting the Cong’s perceived neglect of the region and its alleged lack of support for the Dogras.
