Thu Sep 26 04:56:30 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Flooded as Monsoon Rains Cause Havoc

Mumbai and various regions of Maharashtra were battered by relentless rainfall on Wednesday, causing widespread disruption to transportation, travel, and daily life. The downpour triggered severe waterlogging, impacting local train services, flight operations, and road traffic.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning for the region, leading authorities to close schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar on Thursday.

**Train and Flight Delays:**

Local train services on the Central Railway were significantly impacted, with slow train services between Vidyavihar and Mulund stations disrupted starting at 9:10 PM. However, local trains on the Western Railway continued to operate on schedule.

Several train services, including the CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express and LTT-HW Superfast Express, were rescheduled and experienced delays.

Flights were also affected, with airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara announcing potential diversions due to the weather. Passengers were advised to check their flight status.

**Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos:**

The city witnessed widespread waterlogging, with neighborhoods such as Bhandup, Mulund, Vikhroli, and Chembur experiencing severe inundation. The Andheri subway was closed to traffic due to water accumulation reaching nearly two and a half feet.

The Eastern Express Highway faced significant traffic congestion. Mumbai Traffic Police issued warnings about waterlogging at the Andheri and Malad subways, as well as in Sakhar Panchayat and Hindmata.

**Landslide and Road Closures:**

A rain-related landslide occurred on the Mumbra bypass road, blocking traffic. Fire department teams were deployed to clear the rocks and reopen the road.

The Malad Subway was closed due to water accumulation, causing traffic to be rerouted via Sainath Road.

Despite the challenges, local train services have resumed and are expected to be fully operational by the end of the day. However, the impact of the heavy rainfall on daily life and travel in Mumbai remains substantial, highlighting the difficulties posed by the monsoon season in India’s bustling metropolis.
