Wed Sep 25 23:54:19 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Batters by Heavy Rains, City on Red Alert
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, causing widespread flooding, halting local train services, and diverting flights. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and its neighboring districts, with the alert valid until 8:30 am on Thursday.
Low-lying areas were inundated, with some regions receiving over 100 mm of rainfall in just five hours. Local trains on the Central line were halted between Kurla and Thane stations, stranding thousands of commuters. Traffic jams were reported across the city.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus service was also affected due to heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and traffic congestion.
The heavy rains resulted in the tragic death of a 45-year-old woman who drowned in an overflowing nullah in suburban Andheri.
The BMC urged residents to stay indoors if possible, issuing a contact number (1916) for assistance. Schools and colleges in Mumbai and its suburbs will remain closed on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
The downpour caused widespread disruption to travel. Long-distance trains were rescheduled, and two flights were diverted from Mumbai Airport, while seven others had to circle the city before landing.
Despite the challenges, authorities are working to manage the situation. The BMC has directed key officials and engineers to monitor the situation and stay in control rooms.
The heavy rainfall has also caused waterlogging in other areas, including Sir Parshuram College Ground in Pune, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a rally on Thursday.
While the rain has brought much hardship to the city, the situation is being closely monitored, and authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
