Thu Sep 26 03:56:35 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Batters Through Heavy Rainfall, Red Alert Issued for Today
**Mumbai, India -** A day after torrential rainfall brought Mumbai to its knees, the city is bracing for another round of heavy showers with a red alert issued for Thursday. Schools and colleges remain closed as the previous day’s downpour caused widespread waterlogging in various areas.
This is the first red alert issued in Mumbai this month, with the last warning issued on July 25th. Though road and rail traffic has returned to normal this morning as water levels receded, authorities are urging citizens to stay indoors as much as possible.
The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) and police have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel. “Mumbaikars, if not required, avoid stepping out of home,” the BMC posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Yesterday, the city recorded over 250 mm of rainfall between 4 pm and 10 pm, leading to severe waterlogging in several areas, including Bhandup, Mulund, Vikhroli, and Chembur. The Andheri subway was closed due to the accumulation of water.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Pune today, where he will flag off the new Metro line connecting District Court to Swargate and inaugurate various projects worth over Rs. 22,600 crore.
Tragically, a woman, Vimal Anil Gaikwad (45), lost her life after falling into a drain in Andheri East. Her body was recovered by the Mumbai Fire Brigade on Wednesday night.
Despite the subsided rainfall this morning, BEST bus services are operating on their regular routes. However, four buses, including three owned by the BEST and one wet lease bus, were damaged due to waterlogging and are currently out of service.
The situation remains fluid as authorities monitor the weather conditions and assess the extent of damage.
