Thu Sep 26 02:10:30 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Batters Down as Heavy Rains Bring Chaos
Mumbai and surrounding areas are facing a deluge of heavy rains, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city until Thursday morning. The downpour has caused widespread disruption to transportation, with local trains facing delays and some even being rescheduled, leaving commuters stranded at various stations.
Schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, and Pune have declared a holiday for Thursday, September 26th, in view of the safety concerns arising from the incessant rainfall.
The IMD has also issued red alerts for Palghar and Nashik, along with orange alerts for Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Pune, predicting isolated heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa during September 25th to 27th.
Central Railway officials have urged commuters to remain inside trains due to waterlogging and cautioned that train services are operating at a reduced speed for safety.
The heavy downpour has also impacted air travel, with two flights being diverted and seven flights performing “go-arounds” at Mumbai airport due to the inclement weather.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and has deployed workers to address waterlogging issues in affected areas.
The Mumbai rains are expected to continue throughout the week, with the IMD predicting extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.
