Mumbai and surrounding areas are facing severe consequences of heavy rainfall that began on Wednesday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city till 8 am on Thursday.

The downpour has caused significant disruption to transportation, with local train services on the central line and several express trains being delayed or rescheduled. Waterlogging on tracks between Kurla and Thane left commuters stranded at various stations.

Similarly, Pune District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase has announced a public holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad on September 26 due to the orange alert issued by IMD.

Central Railway has urged commuters to remain inside trains for their safety, as trains are running at a cautious speed due to waterlogging. Meanwhile, the Mumbai airport witnessed two flight diversions and seven flights had to make a go-around due to the inclement weather.

The IMD has also issued a red alert for Palghar and Nashik and an orange alert for Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Pune for Thursday. The weather department predicts isolated heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra during September 25-27.
