**Mumbai, India -** A day after torrential rain brought Mumbai to its knees, the city is facing an “orange” alert for Thursday, with schools and colleges remaining closed. The downpour on Wednesday led to widespread waterlogging, claiming the life of a 45-year-old woman who drowned in a drain near Andheri.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and its surrounding districts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad for Thursday morning. The Mumbai civic body and police have urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible.
Wednesday’s rainfall was the highest single-day rainfall recorded in Mumbai since 2020, with over 250 mm of rain recorded in some areas. The city’s infrastructure bore the brunt of the downpour, with several areas facing severe waterlogging and the Andheri subway closed due to accumulated water.
As water levels recede, road and rail traffic have resumed normal operations on Thursday morning. However, the IMD’s continued warnings highlight the potential for further disruption throughout the day.
In addition to the fatality in Mumbai, two laborers were struck by lightning in Kalyan and another woman drowned near a waterfall in Khopoli.
Despite the heavy rainfall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pune has been cancelled. He was scheduled to inaugurate several projects worth over Rs. 22,600 crore.
The city’s BEST bus services have resumed operations on Thursday morning, however, some buses were damaged due to the waterlogging.
