Wed Sep 25 19:54:11 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Batters Under Red Alert as Heavy Rains Lash City

**Mumbai, India – September 25, 2024:** The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and its surrounding areas after heavy rains battered the city on Wednesday, following a period of respite. The orange alert for the city has been upgraded due to the “extremely heavy rainfall” forecast for the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts are expected to experience “extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.” Palghar has also been issued a red alert, while Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Pune are under an orange warning for Thursday, September 26.

The IMD attributed the heavy rainfall to a trough extending from north Konkan to south Bangladesh, along with a cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh. This weather pattern is likely to cause widespread light to moderate rainfall over Konkan and Goa throughout the week.

The heavy rains have already caused disruptions in Mumbai, with traffic snarls due to waterlogging in several areas and delays in local train services. Flights have also been affected, with two flights diverted and seven making go-arounds due to stormy weather conditions.

Suburbs like Mulund experienced particularly heavy rainfall, inundating low-lying areas. The island city also faced significant rainfall, causing slow road traffic and poor visibility.

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Nashik and Dhule districts in north Maharashtra.

The city is bracing for more heavy rain in the coming days. The IMD advises residents to stay informed about the weather forecast and take necessary precautions.
