Wed Sep 25 04:01:27 UTC 2024: ## Mining Giant Mineral Resources Leases Kambalda Airport for Multi-Million Dollar Fly-in Fly-Out Operations
**Coolgardie, WA:** In a deal described as a “once in a lifetime opportunity,” ASX-listed mining company Mineral Resources has secured a 21-year lease of Kambalda Airport, located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. The company plans to utilize the airport for their fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workforce servicing their nearby lithium mines, Mount Marion and Bald Hill.
Mineral Resources, led by billionaire Chris Ellison, has pledged to invest at least $30 million in upgrading the airport’s runway and terminal facilities. The plan includes expanding capacity to accommodate 180 passengers at a time and potentially adding aviation fuel facilities and aerodrome lighting to enable night operations.
The lease agreement will see Mineral Resources pay an annual fee starting at $75,000, escalating to $122,896 by the end of the lease term. Additionally, they will pay the Shire of Coolgardie $20 per passenger flying in and out of the airport. This is projected to generate between $12.6 million and $32.6 million in revenue for the council over the 21 years.
The deal has generated some concerns from other mining companies regarding equitable access to the airport and potential cost increases. However, Mineral Resources has assured the council that third-party operators will be able to continue using the airport.
Shire of Coolgardie president Malcolm Cullen expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, stating it will provide a significant financial boost to the local council and lessen their burden in maintaining the airstrip.
The proposed deal is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
This move comes amidst a downturn in lithium prices, with Mineral Resources founder Chris Ellison revealing plans to reduce production at their lithium mines to stabilize the market. Despite the market challenges, Mr. Ellison remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of lithium and has ruled out closing the mines.
**This agreement marks a significant step for Mineral Resources, consolidating their operations in the Goldfields and establishing a robust FIFO system for their lithium mining workforce. The move will also inject substantial revenue into the Shire of Coolgardie, contributing to the local economy.**
