Wed Sep 25 09:15:00 UTC 2024: ## Red Bull Confirms Negotiations with Fernando Alonso, But Mateschitz Philosophy Prevented Deal

**Milton Keynes, UK -** Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, has revealed that the team held talks with two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso in the past. However, the deal was ultimately rejected due to the company’s philosophy, set by the late Dietrich Mateschitz, which prioritizes developing their own drivers rather than signing established stars.

Marko explained that Red Bull’s sponsorship model focuses on investing in drivers who have the potential to become future Grand Prix winners. “We were negotiating with Fernando Alonso at the time, but he said we don’t buy stars, we make them ourselves,” Marko said.

Alonso, who has been racing in Formula One for over two decades, joined the sport with Minardi in 2001 and went on to win championships with Renault. He has also driven for Ferrari, McLaren, and Alpine, before joining Aston Martin last season.

Despite the difficulties Aston Martin has faced in recent races, Alonso signed a multi-year contract with the team in April, committing him until at least 2026.

Marko’s comments shed light on Red Bull’s approach to driver recruitment, highlighting their commitment to developing talent within their own system. While the team has been successful with drivers like Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, it seems the late Mateschitz’s philosophy has prevented them from signing established stars like Alonso.
