Wed Sep 25 02:07:12 UTC 2024: ## Missouri Executes Man Despite Concerns Over Case Integrity

**Bonne Terre, Missouri:** Marcellus Williams, a 55-year-old man convicted of murder in 1998, was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday evening despite numerous concerns raised about the integrity of his trial. Williams was found guilty of the stabbing death of Lisha Gayle, a former newspaper reporter, during what appeared to be a burglary.

The execution was carried out despite appeals from Williams’ legal team, the original prosecutor, and even Gayle’s family. They all argued that new evidence, including DNA testing, pointed to Williams’ innocence. The testing revealed no trace of Williams’ DNA on the murder weapon but did show the DNA of a prosecutor and an investigator who handled the knife without gloves.

The case also raised concerns about racial bias, as the prosecution excluded Black jurors from the original trial.

While a deal was struck to commute Williams’ sentence to life in prison, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey objected, and the state Supreme Court blocked the agreement. Ultimately, the state Supreme Court affirmed Williams’ conviction, concluding that the lack of evidence on the knife was not enough to establish his innocence.

Williams’ execution comes amidst a growing debate about the death penalty in the United States, with several states abolishing or imposing moratoriums on the practice. This week, executions were scheduled in five states, an unusually high number in recent years.
