Wed Sep 25 04:10:27 UTC 2024: ## Adelaide Man Charged with Manslaughter of Seven-Week-Old Baby Released on Bail
An Adelaide man has been charged with manslaughter after the death of a seven-week-old baby in his care. Shane John Marshall, 50, was arrested and charged on Wednesday, appearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court later that day.
Police allege that Marshall inflicted injuries on the infant on the afternoon of July 24 while the baby was in his care. The injured baby was taken by ambulance to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital at approximately 4 pm that day. Tragically, the baby succumbed to his injuries six days later on July 30. His death was declared a major crime by authorities on July 31.
During the court proceedings, a police prosecutor requested a suppression order preventing the publication of the defendant’s identity, which was not granted by Magistrate Roderick Jensen. Marshall’s legal representative sought his release on supervised bail to reside with his parents, a request which was not opposed by the prosecution.
Taking into account Marshall’s lack of prior criminal history and the extended time before the matter returns to court in January, Magistrate Jensen granted bail.
The case is scheduled to return to court in January 2024.
