**St. Louis, MO** – Marcellus Williams, convicted of the 1998 murder of journalist Lisha Gayle, was executed yesterday in Missouri despite mounting evidence suggesting his possible innocence.
The execution was met with widespread criticism, including from the prosecutor in the case and Gayle’s own family, who both advocated for a life sentence instead. Williams maintained his innocence throughout his 20 years on death row, and his attorneys presented new DNA evidence linking the murder weapon to an unknown male, not Williams.
Despite a petition signed by over a million people, including British billionaire Richard Branson, Governor Mike Parson and the state Supreme Court refused to intervene. Williams’ lawyers filed two last-minute appeals to the US Supreme Court, but they were also denied.
“Tonight, we all bear witness to Missouri’s grotesque exercise of state power,” said Williams’ attorney, Tricia Rojo Bushnell. “This should never happen, and we must not let it continue.”
The execution was particularly controversial given a trial judge’s initial decision to vacate Williams’ conviction based on the new DNA evidence. However, that decision was later reversed after Missouri’s Attorney General contested it.
Williams’ death marks the third execution in Missouri this year and the 15th in the United States. The case has sparked renewed debate about the death penalty system, with many questioning its fairness and effectiveness in light of potential wrongful convictions.
