**SIBU, Sarawak** – Corporal Petrus Linggi Liman, a 29-year-old Malaysian soldier, was tragically killed on Monday, September 23rd, during a training exercise in Sarawak. The cause of death was a gunshot wound allegedly inflicted by an unidentified member of the public.
According to local media reports, the suspect may have been a poacher. The Malaysian Army Command Public Relations Cell confirmed the incident, stating that Corporal Liman was shot while resting with his platoon. The soldiers heard a motorcycle passing through a nearby trail followed by a gunshot. An immediate perimeter inspection revealed Corporal Liman injured. He was given first aid on-site before being transported to Song Health Clinic and later to Kapit Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:43 AM.
Corporal Liman’s cousin, Desmond Leo Naga Janting, described him as an “independent and resilient person” who was also a good friend and brother. Desmond, heartbroken over the loss, expressed his inability to return to their longhouse to pay his last respects.
The Malaysian Defence Minister, Khaled Nordin, expressed his condolences to Corporal Liman’s family, acknowledging the immense difficulty of this time.
The authorities are currently investigating the incident and searching for the suspect.
